Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the people, families, and communities whose contributions have helped shape Florida. As home to about 6.7 million Latino residents, over a quarter of the state's population is Hispanic. And over the last decade, Hispanic households have accounted for 34.3% of Florida’s homeownership growth.
More Hispanic Families Are Becoming Homeowners in Florida
Florida’s Hispanic population has grown considerably over the past decade, and homeownership statistics have grown along with it.
Hispanic households accounted for more than one-third of the state’s homeownership growth during 2025. Florida’s Latino population also has a median age of about 37, compared with about 43 for the state overall. That younger population is likely to remain an important part of housing demand as households form, families grow, and housing needs change.
The Florida Homeownership Gap
Despite that growth, Florida’s Hispanic homeownership rate remains below the statewide rate: 56% compared to 68%.
Florida buyers are navigating home prices, homeowners insurance, property taxes, available inventory, and upfront costs. Those factors can affect whether buying is realistic and where buyers can afford to live.
The intensity of these challenges also varies considerably across Florida. Buying a home in Miami-Dade can look very different from buying in Central Florida or Tampa Bay.
Looking Ahead
Nearly three in 10 Florida residents are Hispanic or Latino, and Hispanic households already account for a substantial share of the state’s recent homeownership growth.
There is also room for growth. The current homeownership gap, combined with Florida’s younger Hispanic population, means many households will be making decisions about renting and buying in the years ahead.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, homeownership offers one way to look at the role Hispanic families already play in Florida communities and how that role continues to evolve.
